Laboratory Technician
Myriant Technologies is seeking to hire a Laboratory Technician who will provide both non-technical and technical support for a biotech laboratory group of about 20 scientists, currently located in Woburn, MA. His/her primary responsibilities will be washing and sterilizing laboratory glassware in order to keep those items well-stocked, preparing and sterilizing (when appropriate) biochemical and microbiological solutions and pouring nutrient-agar Petri plates with careful sterile technique. Other duties include keeping the laboratory counters clean and shelves stocked and organized and assisting in equipment cleanliness and maintenance. He/she should expect to learn how to weigh out chemicals accurately and adhere to the rules for safe handling of chemicals and equipment as part of acceptable laboratory practices. A person who shows appropriate motivation and aptitude may be trained to advance to performing simple molecular biology laboratory protocols.
General lab maintenance, which includes the following:
- Gather, wash and sterilize lab glassware and other lab implements.
- Prepare and sterilize microbiological media, including Petri plates and liquids.
- Keep water baths and laboratory equipment clean.
- Keep common areas clean and uncluttered- e.g., wipe down (ethanol or bleach) benches, wipe out microwave ovens, un-clutter and wipe weighing areas.
- Remove and appropriately handle biohazard waste.
- Safely operate autoclaves, laboratory dishwashers, laboratory and microwave ovens; be aware and implement the safety precautions for equipment such as spectrophotometers, gel electrophoresis units, centrifuges, etc.
- Monitor general supplies such as pipettes, paper towels, gloves, etc., and place orders to maintain acceptable quantities. Shelve and organize items.
- Prepare and stock chemical solutions, buffers and reagents as requested.
- Keep accurate records of media and biochemical preparation and experimental data in a research notebook.
- Comply with all safety regulations and company policies.
Education and/or Experience
- Associates degree in science or related field. Bachelors degree preferred.
- 2 years experience working in a biotech/biology laboratory preferred.
- Understanding of the importance and details of sterile technique.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to effectively work individually and in a team.
- Responsible and reliable.
- Motivation to learn.
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing required while checking and maintaining equipment. Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Molecular biology and microbiology laboratory and kitchen environment.
- Some computer time.
- Dishwasher, autoclaves, glassware, pipettes, centrifuge, microscope, balances, pH meters, spectrophotometer, other laboratory instruments and equipment, desk-top computers.
