Director of Technology Transfer & Scale Up
Summary

The Scale up and Tech Transfer division is responsible for technology scale up and engineering/data transfer from bench-to-pilot-to-demonstration scale. The Director of Technology Transfer & Scale Up works in close collaboration with colleagues in Research & Development (R&D;), Business Development, Finance and other departments as well as with external vendors and collaborators. The Director acts as the clearinghouse for data collection, performs engineering analyses, works with external EPCs, and delivers recommendations on final process design for the 'Complete Technology Package'. This division is responsible for scale up and development of PFDs, P&IDs;, financial proformas, and technoeconomic analyses of each technology package. The Director leads the effort to transfer technology from R&D; into the pilot plant and directs technical implementation plans in pilot operations. In addition, The Director is responsible for technology transfer and implementation from pilot to the demonstration plant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Technology development and transfer of process data from bench to pilot to demonstration scale
  • Interact with colleagues in R&D; to gather data and finalize process design
  • Work closely with Business Development, Finance and other departments as well as with external vendors and collaborators
  • Interact with design and engineering firms and EPC contractors to create design packages
  • Provide technology implementation plans and schedules for pilot and demonstration projects
  • Develop complete technology packages with PFDs, P&IDs;, proformas, material and energy balances; direct FEL 1, 2, 3 engineering phases.
  • Direct implementation of technology packages in pilot and demonstration plants
  • Interact with pilot and demonstration plant teams including engineering, operations and maintenance
  • 25-50% travel required
  • Other duties may be assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise a small group of engineers (2-5) in process engineering, technology transfer and scale up including material balance development, equipment specification, facility shake-down, startups and technoeconomic analyses
  • Manage technical aspect of contracts with design and engineering firms
  • Manage technical aspects of partnerships and joint ventures
  • Manage shake-down and start-up teams in pilot and demonstration plants

Education and/or Experience
  • PhD/ MS / BS in Chemical / Biochemical Engineering or similar discipline. Fermentation and Separation experience a must
  • 10 to 15 years experience- depending on degree and recent experience- in the relevant field
  • Demonstrated management skills, prior management of technical teams a must
  • Expertise in Microsoft suite products including Excel, Project and PowerPoint required
  • Aspen Plus or HYSIS experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to effectively work individually and in a team
