Quincy, MA (January 8, 2013) – Myriant Corporation, a global renewable chemicals company, announced today the appointment of Montgomery Alger, Ph.D. to the newly created position of Senior Vice President of Research and Development (R&D). Dr. Alger, who has three decades of senior R&D leadership experience with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. and General Electric (GE) Company, will be responsible for establishing and executing Myriant's research and development strategy in support of advancing the Company's pipeline of bio-based chemicals. Dr. Alger will report to Cenan Ozmeral, Ph.D., Myriant's Chief Operating Officer.
Prior to joining Myriant, Dr. Alger was the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Air Products (NYSE:APD), a company that supplies industrial gases, performance materials, equipment and technology with global supply positions in growth markets such as semiconductor materials, refinery hydrogen, coal gasification, natural gas liquefaction, and advanced coatings and adhesives. At Air Products, Dr. Alger was responsible for R&D and he championed new process and product technology development for the company's gases and specialty materials businesses, as well as the expansion of the Company's R&D effort in China. Prior to Air Products, Dr. Alger spent 23 years at General Electric (NYSE: GE) where he began at the Corporate Research center and led technology development for several businesses including GE Battery, Lighting, Appliances, and Plastics. He was General Manager of Technology for the Advanced Materials Business and General Manager of Technology for GE Plastic's Noryl® Business, where he advanced new product technology from concept to commercialization.

Dr. Alger received B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Alger serves on the Chemical Engineering Advisory Councils at Lehigh University, Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of California-Santa Barbara. He served as a board member for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Alger is a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt.
Simultaneous with the appointment of Dr. Alger, Myriant also announced today that Jan Pero, Ph.D., Myriant's Vice President of Research and Development, will assume the role of Chief Technology Officer and Chairperson of Myriant's Scientific Advisory Board from Joseph P. Glas, Ph.D., who is retiring.
Myriant utilizes its proprietary technology platform to develop innovative, performance-based, renewable chemicals utilizing low-cost sugars. In December, 2010, Myriant broke ground on its flagship 30 million pound commercial bio-succinic acid facility in Lake Providence, Louisiana, and anticipates beginning commercial production in early 2013. The company's D(-) lactic acid started production at commercial scale in June, 2008, for use in polylactic acid. Myriant has agreements with ThyssenKrupp Uhde GmbH for engineering, Davy Process Technology for the integration of Myriant's bio-succinic acid process with the Davy butanediol process for the production of bio-based butanediol, and PTT Chemical for the commercialization of Myriant's technology in Southeast Asia.
