Summary

Myriant Corporation is located in the Greater Boston area – a mega hub for new technology incubators - and is a wholly owned subsidiary of PTT Global Chemical Company, a $15 billion petrochemical and material conglomerate headquartered in Thailand. Myriant serves both as a biotechnology research & development center, as well as a technology scouting unit for PTTGC with a mission to find and develop new blockbuster, synergistic technology and bring it to commercialization.

Myriant has already commercialized multi-million dollars worth of bio-succinic acid and bio-lactic acid technologies, which are excellent bio-based building blocks for various applications, including plastics, polymers, food, animal feed, and agriculture. Reporting to the Director of Technology and Business Development, the New Technology Research Analyst will be responsible for new technology scouting, market research, SWOT analysis, competitive benchmarking and techno-economic analysis of new technologies and business opportunities in various industrial areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the identification and evaluation of new materials and viable new technologies and solutions that are in line with market megatrends
  • Partner with peers in R&D, Marketing, and PTTGC to identify external business and technology needs
  • Execute scouting strategies/briefs against core business needs
  • Manage product pipeline portfolio and prepare information packages for Stage Gate review
  • Conduct market research to analyze market opportunities and competitive landscape for new product pipeline
  • Work with scientists and chemists to devise conceptual process flowsheets, capital costs, production costs, and economic benefits of new product opportunities
  • Develop Myriant's product value propositions and support the development of collateral material for presentation to the market
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge regarding competitive products, competitor companies, and not-in-kind competitive products
  • Proactively identify and resolve intellectual property issues with new products
  • Promote and sell new ideas/technologies to a wide-range of internal stakeholders
  • Serve as the key technology expert in collaborative/partnering research and feasibility evaluations
  • Conduct and/or lead the assessment of novel technologies/solutions
  • Document findings from scouting activities and effectively sharing with peers and facilitating knowledge management

Qualifications

  • Strong technical background and broad knowledge in the area of new material, polymers, or new chemical building blocks
  • Background knowledge in techno-economic evaluation or some coursework in financial accounting
  • Ability to drive market relevant technical projects to completion
  • Ability to summarize and distill complex technical concepts and effectively communicating and presenting both verbally and written to global audiences from various levels and backgrounds
  • Proficient in driving results, accountability and ability to change pace and focus
  • Experience in value chain analysis
  • Detail-oriented approach to problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to establish key contacts and to network across functions within a complex business environment internally
  • Demonstrated ability to establish key contacts and decision makers, and to network effectively within external organizations, industries and/or universities
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions within the business unit and across the organization
  • Strong written and communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated track record of successful technical development
  • Professional presentation skills

Education and/or Experience

  • B.S. Material Science, Polymer Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related field
  • Advanced degree or M.B.A preferred
  • Experience with techno-economic model or financial model development is a plus
  • Experience with performing market research and competitive benchmarking
  • 1-3 year's experience in Market Research, Business Development, R&D or product pipeline management in material, chemical or biotech industries
