The Process Development division primarily focuses on downstream separation process development and improvements, preliminary engineering & economic assessments, renewable sugar feedstocks evaluation. This division involves hands-on research regarding membrane filtration, ion exchange, chromatography, distillation, crystallization and developing new processes for product recovery as well as process engineering support at our demonstration scale plant in Louisiana.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning and preparation of day to day experimental plans and conducting hands-on lab experiments for a variety of unit operations like Membrane Filtration, Ion Exchange, Crystallization, Distillation, Solvent Extraction, etc with an objective to achieve optimal process performance while meeting the products quality, safety, environmental and economic goals.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret pertinent unit operations data to optimize process parameters and resolving operating issues.
  • Conduct Material and Energy balances for various downstream bio-chemical recovery unit operations.
  • Participate in trials and experiments at various scales and facilities as needed. Interface with equipment vendors regarding equipment specifications, testing and troubleshooting.
  • Write good quality progress reports and presentations.
  • Provide input to technology implementation plans.
  • Work with operating plant staff in testing processes at pilot and demonstration scale.
  • Help in writing SOPs, work Instructions and any other operational protocols for major downstream equipment. Keep track of key downstream unit operation performance KPIs as needed to support the demonstration scale plant.
  • Comply with all safety regulations and company policies.
  • Travel: up to 25%.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum BS in Chemical or Biochemical Engineering with solid knowledge of chemical process unit operations is required. MS preferred.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience working in a research and development facility or pilot/commercial plant in relevant field is required.
  • Prior experience with unit operations like ion exchange, membrane filtration, crystallization is preferred.
  • Ability to analyze complex scientific problems and develop technical solutions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite products including Excel, Project and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interest in working in a research lab and attention to detail is a must.
