Summary

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager develops, implements and oversees Myriant's flagship 30 million pounds per year succinic acid production facility safety programs in compliance with local, state and federal regulations. Ensures facility compliance at all times for all air and water environmental standards as well as compliance with employee OSHA safety programs. This position has budgetary accountability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Develops, implements and trains facility management and employees on health and safety policies, along with OSHA (Occupational Safety Health Administration) compliance programs to ensure a safety first culture. Develop and maintain OSHA compliance training schedule and EH&S training calendar.
  • Ensure implementation of a Behavioral Based Safe Work Practices, including providing training and making required changes.
  • Establish and maintain relationship with local fire departments and response organizations to facilitate their participation in the Emergency Response Plan.
  • Establish, implement and maintain OSHA compliance data systems, providing clear, timely access to information for reporting.
  • Develop, implement and maintain facility's Process Safety Management (PSM) program.
  • Compile, analyze, interpret and report accident, loss, and exposure statistical data; prepare comprehensive recommendations for corrective action to eliminate or minimize potential hazards.
  • Review injury and property damage reports. Responsible for the overall administration of worker's compensation program in conjunction with and reporting to corporate office.
  • Track leading and lagging indicators for environmental health and safety and health performance.
  • Ensures implementation of process and procedures to maintain compliance with all applicable local, state and federal regulations and permits under OSHA (Occupational Safety Health Administration), TTB (Alcohol & Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau), FRA (Federal Railroad Administration), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), state DNR (Department of Natural Resources) and DOT (Department of Transportation).
  • Develop and Implement facility's Emergency Response Plan (ERP), Integrated Contingency Plan (ICP), Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures (SPCC), Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and Risk Management Plan (RMP).
  • Maintain facility's commitments under the site Air Appropriation, NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) and Waste permits. Complete multimedia responsibility for task driven commitments.
  • Implement site security plan and supervise plant security.
  • Provide leadership to the site's Safety Committee Chairperson and team.
  • Establish, implement and maintain Environmental Health & Safety policies, procedures and systems inventory.
  • Establish, implement and maintain Chemical Management System, including driving change as necessary.
  • Ensure that all facility modifications receive appropriate permitting approval in timely manner to support construction schedule and all facility/system changes are managed through Management of Change (MOC) procedure.
  • Maintain all required materials and any vendor contracts for EH&S training.
  • Complete Tasks required for regular audits of permits, regulations and facility performance criteria.
  • Develop and maintain documents for Environmental Emissions including but not limited to VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) and NOx testing and reporting.
  • Communicate any compliance issues and develop corrective action plans.
  • Ensure "Right to Know" MSDS information is current.
  • Perform weekly audits of facility site; work with facility leadership to resolve any safety or environmental issues.
  • Perform other related duties as directed that correspond to the overall function of this position.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Individual must possess strong leadership competencies to establish a behavioral based safety process/program through influencing others; possess strong technical background in Safety and Environmental regulations, ergonomic, problem solving/judgment, presentation skills, waste/energy conservation, managerial courage, ethics, and building effective relationships.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Safety or Environmental Science.
  • Ten years experience in operating industrial facility subject to OSHA 1910 and environmental, health and safety regulations.
  • Experience with state pollution control standards.
  • Computer expertise and proficiency with MS Windows, MS Office and other related technology(s) to perform the functions of the position.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Demands

  • The employee must regularly lift and or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • From time to time must be able to climb ladders and work at elevations of 175 feet.
  • Sit for more than four hours; and stand, climb, walk for more than four hours.

Equipment Used

  • Experience with the operation of frontend loaders, forklift trucks, and related material handling equipment.

Work Environment

  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, moving equipment and heights above four feet.
  • In the process of training employees, must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, adore harnesses and lanyards, work in confined spaces, wear a face masks and shield.
  • The employee will be exposed to dusty conditions, high noise environments, outside weather in all conditions and to chemicals and raw materials used in the process.
