Summary

Myriant Corporation is a biotechnology company with its Research and Development Center in Woburn, MA. We specialize in producing specialty chemicals and other products from bio-renewable resources. Our first two products are D-lactic acid and bio-succinic acid.

The key focus for the Process Development Group is the development and optimization of recovery and purification processes for our specialty chemicals along with supporting of new products development. We are looking to hire a motivated, hard-working, hands-on and creative Process Chemist/Scientist I with excellent inter-personal skills to join our dynamic team of Chemical Engineers and Chemists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and run laboratory scale experiments to test feasibility of process chemistry solutions.
  • Assist on the relevant chemistry for the development and scale-up of new chemicals from laboratory, to pilot and to commercial scale.
  • Assist in evaluating acid-base or bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for making bio-derived products.
  • Confer with inter-departmental scientists and engineers to analyze laboratory and plant scale data. Generate technical reports and present data.
  • Assist in research and development of bio-based analogues by derivative chemistry to the existing petro-based commodity and performance based chemicals in safe, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient manner.
  • Some limited travel to other Myriant locations and vendor sites for experimental trials may be involved.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelors or Master's degree in Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or a related field with solid knowledge of hydrocarbons, carbohydrates chemistry, resin or catalytic chemistry plus a minimum of two (2) years of post MS or three (3) years post BS experience as a hands-on chemist working in a R&D facility.
  • Extensive theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of the relevant industrial chemistry, reaction mechanisms, and kinetics.
  • Knowledge and experience is desired in various organic chemical reactions such as dehydration, hydrogenation, oxidation, amination, esterification including stereochemistry of various chemical compounds.
  • Ability and judgment to perform detailed technical work relevant to projects with minimum supervision in the laboratory. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Technical communication skills to present results in both written and oral report formats and laboratory records.
  • Safety alertness and attention to detail.
  • An ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
