Research Associate - cellulosic
Summary
Junior level research scientist with hands on experience and knowledge of
DNA, genetic techniques, manipulation of chromosomal DNA in
E. coli and other organism(s),
microbial physiology, preparation of defined media, aerobic and anaerobic
cultures in flasks and small scale fermentors, analyzes experimental data
and reports on results in a monthly report format.
Reviews and utilizes scientific literature and patents.
Works in collaboration with other scientific staff and teams to
achieve scientific goals.
Occasionally prepares and presents a PowerPoint presentation of results to
the Molecular Biology meetings.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
§
Design
oligonucleotides for PCR, plasmid construction and genetic manipulation
§
Genetic techniques
including but not limited to PCR, restriction enzyme digests,
electrophoresis, plasmid construction
§
Manipulation of
E. coli (and other organisms)
chromosomal DNA
§
Design and execute
small scale fermentation experiments to test new genetically modified
strains or medium conditions
§
Use of small scale
fermentors for metabolic evolution (i.e. daily transfer of cultures under
defined conditions).
§
Preparation of
solutions and media for experiments (i.e. not responsible for preparation of
other scientists’ solutions or media)
§
Accurately collect and record research in lab notebook provided by Myriant,
analyze results and prepare technical summaries and reports on a monthly
basis
§
Work well in a team environment to achieve goals.
§
Identify problems and provide solutions
§
Review of
scientific literature
§
Comply with all
safety regulations and company policies

Education and/or
Experience
§
Bachelors or
Masters of Science in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology or
biological engineering or related field
§
Experience working
with cellulose hydrolysate for microbial fermentation
§
Analytical and organizational skills
§
Desire and ability to be a team player, along with the skills necessary to
be a key project team member
§
Experience with computer programs to prepare graphs, plasmid maps,
PowerPoint presentations and Word documents.
§
Energetic, well-trained and self-motivated individual
§
Excellent written
and verbal communication skills

§
Ability to
occasionally lift 25 pounds
§
Frequent standing,
reaching and walking while working in the laboratory
§
Will require
providing coverage of short hours on weekends, holidays and in other
situations to maintain fermentation cultures and take samples.

Frequent pipetting
§
Use of fine motor
skills to handle supplies such as PCR tubes and microcentrifuge tubes
§
Ability to type and
use a computer mouse for prolonged periods of time for reporting purposes
Equipment Used
§
Pipettes,
centrifuges, spectrophotometers, autoclaves, small scale fermentors,
electrophoresis, UV lamps, electroporators and other laboratory instruments
and equipment.
