Sustainability, first defined in 1987 by the Brundtland commission as "development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" has become a critical issue, not only for the chemical and fuels industries, but society as a whole.

Myriant welcomes the challenge and in fact was founded on the core belief that chemical manufacturing can truly be sustainable through implementation of an integrated biorefinery approach designed to convert renewable, non-food biomass into high value products while sequestering carbon dioxide, consuming less energy and producing less waste.

Cellulosic based biorefineries also consume biomass otherwise considered as waste material.  The recycling of such materials via conversion to high value specialty chemicals reduces both resource consumption and waste management requirements.
